Founded in 1890, the University of Tasmania is situated in the Sandy Bay area of Hobart and features a large complex of university buildings, faculties and student accommodation. In 1991, the Hobart's university merged with the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology (TSIT) in Newnham, Launceston, forming the current University of Tasmania.

With many original, historic buildings, Hobart's University of Tasmania (UTAS) has expanded over the years and is now home to more than 12,000 students and 1,500 staff in total, located on two main campuses, in Hobart and also in Launceston, on the northern Tasmanian coast. Hobart's University of Tasmania campus features around 9,000 students and was the fourth university to be established in the whole Australia. This historic university was originally located on the Domain in Hobart, but relocated in the 1940s to Sandy Bay, where there was more space available to allow for the university's considerable expansion plans.




With a vast campus, spread over the Hobart and Sandy Bay area, the University of Tasmania (UTAS) concentrates on many different areas of study, often leading the way in both research techniques and findings.
