Hobart is widely known for its exceptional markets and tourists visiting the city often find themselves drawn to the stalls when looking for good-quality Aussie craftsmanship and unusual souvenirs.Well worth a visit is the excellent Salamanca Market, which is based within the inner-precinct of Salamanca Plaza, just across from Parliament Square and St. David's Park, and close to Sullivans Cove. Established by locals in Hobart during the early 1970s as a friendly community project, the Salamanca Market began its life with just a dozen or so stalls and has steadily grown in size over the subsequent decades, regularly attracting enormous crowds each Saturday which now exceed 25,000 people.
